My husband tries to offer direct eye contact while driving. Scares the bejesus out of me. There is something about the road-trip memory that always seems to make it rank high on the list. I wonder why that is? Thanks, as always, for the inspiration. :-).

you know i'm chuckling and chortling . . . and nodding in agreement and busting at the seams with things to say. where to start? let me get this out of the way first: i still adore road trips with my children (even if only to run errands) because that's when we have The Best Talks. same goes for husband, too, actually. i've decided it has to do with nowhere else to go plus the absence of direct eye contact. so there's that. then i want to tell you about the one time a friend went with my daughter and me on an impromptu road trip. at one exit, we stopped for gas, then decided we were hungry so we crossed the street for a bite to eat, then we saw an opportunity for dessert, so we availed ourselves of that. that one detour cost us more than an hour of trip time, and yet today - some 8 years later - it still reigns as one of our all-time favorite memories. and that's something you just can't quantify.
