Promise #79: Hold it together with strength and conviction

There’s no use arguing about it: paper clips and rubber bands share the same lot in life. They hold things together.

Sure, the “things” are different, but the functionality is the same.

Paper clips are twisted, rigid, bent in two with rounded corners and seemingly one-dimensional to the naked eye. Most people think that if a paper clip isn’t holding paper-thin things together then it’s useless. That’s not entirely the case, but perception is often reality.

Rubber bands, on the other hand, live large. Complete. Flexible. Potential fashion-icon-status. Produced in lovely colors. Able to urge you to Live Strong or Find Peace or something equally inspirational. They lasso big things and small, adorn wrists, turn slingshots into works of art. Only problem is rubber bands eventually snap and crack under pressure.

Not the case with that shiny, silver thing.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

That tiny little clip will perform for you for as long as you need and as long as you like.

Just goes to show the trick in holding it together is knowing where to place your trust.

  • *laughs* – love the analogy!

Although… I also have paperclips in a whole rainbow of colours. And I’ve seen them in all kinds of shapes and sizes too.

Also, they’re apparently really good for picking locks with… or so I’ve heard ;-) And convincing stuck CD/DVD players to open again without damaging anything. And resetting watch buttons.

Try doing any of *that* with a flashy rubber band!

(errr… I promise that when I started writing this comment, I didn’t intend for it to become a treatise in defence of the humble paperclip!)

    • Tanja-I’m happy to report, in defense of the paper clip, there are more than 101 uses (as reported by Google). Yahoo!

Your comment made me smile. Thanks for chiming in. I’ll be in touch if I happen to lock myself out of the house, not that you could help with that. :)

    • Thanks, Kimberly. If only it were as easy as just clipping a few papers together…dare to dream.
